Purpose Driven: Organic Growers School
The Simply Organic Giving Fund donated $10,000 to the Organic Growers School (OGS), a non-profit organization committed to "building a vibrant food and farming community by boosting the success of organic home growers and farmers" in the Southern Appalachians.
Their programs for farmers include a wide variety of training programs — lasting from hours to a year — for everyone from aspiring apprentices to farm owners. They also maintain extensive lists of resources for farm training and apprenticeships; technical, business and financial information; organic, non-GMO and other certification information; sources of organic feed; and info on special programs, such as those for veteran farmers.
OGS sees gardeners as vital partners in a thriving organic food community. They offer a six-week course with hands-on sessions in a community garden and a daylong, entry-level, exploratory workshop, Homestead Dreams, to help participants incorporate small-scale, self-sufficiency and sustainability into their lives. OGS's online Gardener's Library provides gardeners with articles on the basics of organic growing, composting, cover cropping, watering and more.
The farmers and gardeners in Western North Carolina are fortunate to have this inspiring and affordable resource for organic growing and living.
