Our Purpose


Most companies look out for the bottom line. We do, too. In fact, we have a triple bottom line: people, profit, planet. You can't have one without the other two. So when we look after our own, we mean everybody: our employees, our customers, our families, ourselves. And yes, our environment, too. Our ingredients—right down to the packaging—are simple, natural, and responsible. We practice what we preach—and we hope to set the example for others to follow.


It's called The Greater Good. And it's how we're going to help change the world.


Our Culture


"What's right isn't always popular. What's popular isn't always right." Wise words from one of our first catalogues, published over 20 years ago. It's wisdom that continues to inspire us today, and it's why we do things a little differently around here. No trash cans at our desks, for example. We like a little yoga with lunch. We speak our minds. We help our neighbors. In short, we practice what we preach.


That's why we encourage our employees to take time off to go do something good for the world. It's why, each year, we hold a Culture Day to promote community outreach—in the past we've planted urban gardens and built hive boxes for the recovering bee population. We encourage wellness through weekly onsite yoga. And through the Greater Good Team, we strive to maintain environmentally friendly practices within our company and alongside our partners.


We're basically a bunch of hands-on, tree-hugging, greased elbow do-gooders. It's kind of what makes our company special. We think the bees would agree.

Our Standards


When you buy a Burt's Bees® product, you can expect the scent and texture of the best nature has to offer. Whether you're using Lip Balm, Body Wash, or Facial Cleanser, we want you to have a positive experience every time.


That's why we take every step to keep our products fresh and useful for as long as possible. Sometimes we use synthetics to bolster those products' natural components.


On average, our products are 99% natural; over half are 100% natural. How can you tell? Just look at the Natural Bar; it shows the exact percentage of each product's natural ingredients. This feature has been a mainstay of Burt's Bees® for as long as we've been in business. It's unique to our company, and we're proud of that fact.


But we know what you're thinking: "99% natural? Why not 100% natural? What's the last 1%?" We get asked that a lot.


Preservation of natural formulas is challenging and we’ve found that natural preservatives simply aren’t effective in some formulas. To ensure the safety, efficacy, and aesthetic of our formulas, we use the synthetic preservative phenoxyethanol at 1% or below in some of our water-containing products. We chose it because it is a non-paraben, non-formaldehyde-releasing preservative and is used broadly in natural personal care products.


Yet we know we can do more. And in our pursuit of being 100% natural 100% of the time, we're always looking for natural preservatives that will work as well, or better, than their synthetic counterparts.
