Ravensara essential oil

Botanical Name: Ravensara aromatica Sonnerat.

Family: Lauraceae.

Synonyms: Agatophyllum aromaticum ; ravensare; Hazomanitra; Havozo.

Origin: Endemic plant of Madagascar. It grows wild in the evergreen, humid central eastern rain forests of Madagascar at 700 to 1000 meters altitude, but is also found sparsely in the coastal eastern forests.

Botanical Description: A tall tree up to 20-meter (66 ft.) high. Has several buttress roots at the base, with reddish bark and aromatic simple, elliptical leaves. The leaves are green on the superior face and very dull on the inferior face. Flowers are small and green about 2 mm in length. Fruits have six septums inside.

Oil Extraction: Essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves. The oil is clear, colorless to pale yellow mobile liquid.

Aroma Profile: The top note is sweet-spicy. The body note is woody-anisic. The dry-out is less tenacious, anise-seed like, spicy.

Major Constituents: Sabinene, limonene, linalool, methyl chavicol, methyl eugenol, (E)-caryophyllene, α-pinene, β-pinene, myrcene, δ-3-carene, α-terpineol, germacrene D.

Adulterants: Ravintsara oil.

Regulatory Status: None.

Aromatherapy: Clarifying, invigorating, warming.

Blends well with: Cedarwood, lavender, sandalwood, oregano, pine, marjoram, basil, peppermint, cinnamon, clove.

Safety Data: Non-toxic, non-irritant, non-sensitizing. Avoid during pregnancy, if epileptic or with high blood pressure.
