Family: Lamiaceae (Labiatae).
Synonyms: Spanish marjoram; Spanish oregano; mastic thyme oil.
Origin: Native to Portugal. The oil is mostly produced in Spain
Botanical Description: A woody herbaceous shrub up to 50-cm (2.5 ft) high. Has tiny, egg-shaped leaves and white flowers in a terminal head. More tender than most thymes.
Oil Extraction: Essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the flowering herb. The oil is a pale amber to pale orange-amber mobile liquid. Yield 0.5 to 3%.
Aroma Profile: Has a strong, herbaceous, slightly sweet-spicy top note. The middle note is warm, herbaceous, camphoraceous. The dry out is a warm, woody bitter-herbaceous note.
Major Constituents: 1,8-cineole (40 to 65%), linalool (15%), α-pinene, β-pinene, limonene, p-cymene.
Adulterants: 1,8-cineole.
Regulatory Status: None.
Aromatherapy: Invigorating, purifying, uplifting.
Blends well with: Cedarwood, lavender, lemon, rosemary, thyme, marjoram.
Safety Data: Non-toxic, non-sensitizing, non-irritant. Avoid during pregnancy and if epileptic.
