Botanical Name: Juniperus virginiana L.
Family: Cupressaceae.
Synonyms: Eastern red cedar; pencil cedar; Virginia red cedar.
Origin: Native to North America, the mountainous regions of the eastern Rocky Mountains.
Botanical Description: A coniferous, evergreen tree growing up to 35-meters (110 ft) high. Has narrow, pyramid crown and brown cones.
Oil Extraction: Essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of fresh sawdust and other waste wood from lumber manufacture. The oil is a yellow to orange, somewhat viscous liquid. Yield 2%.
Aroma Profile: Has an oily, almost sweet-woody top note, with mild sweet-woody, somewhat balsamic undertone. The dry out is dry-woody, less balsamic.
Major Constituents: α-cedrene (30-40%), cedrol (around 30%), thujopsene, β-caryophyllene.
Adulterants: Rarely adulterated. Texas cedarwood oil can occasionally be mislabeled as Virginia Cedarwood oil

Blends well with: Sandalwood, juniper, rose, cypress, patchouli, vetiver.
